Coda

Coda is cool. "Big Red", as we like to call him around here, or "Toad", is a Collie-mix. What the mix is, we really don't know for certain. We do know that his mom was a purebred Collie, and best guesses for the dad are probably a Golden Retreiver/Border Collie mix (he was adopted from a family friend, so she had good knowlege of the "neighborhood dogs"). Personality & temperament are most like that of a Collie on uppers! He is *extremely* toy motivated, loves nearly everyone he meets, and can be persnickity with other dogs. Although he is a super puppy-nanny! He will play with little puppies all day long, and is great with them. He is usually fine with most dogs, provided they leave all of the toys alone.

Coda was born Sept. 2, 1999. As a baby, he was unbearable, so we were his 3rd home at the young age of 11.5 weeks. But, like all puppies (and dogs) of active breeds (or those made up of various active breeds!), we quickly learned that "Tired Puppies are GOOD puppies!". Tons of energy, but so SMART. He learns everything very quickly, with the exception of "Quiet!". He likes barking, and finds great joy in it.

Coda introduced me to being a "dog lady". I had to get involved in dog things, otherwise he'd have eaten the house up. Together we've done a little sheep herding (HCTs), earned his Canine Good Citizen (CGC) award, and also became certified Pet-Assisted Therapy partners with the Paws For Love program.

I "blame" Coda for steering me toward the next dog I obtained. I had initially wanted a Smooth Collie (that is how I wound up with Coda!), but when I met them, most just didn't have the "Ooomph" that I wanted. They seemed sort of boring (don't get me wrong, I still love Collies!) compared to Coda. So, from there, I stumbled upon the Belgian Shepherds. While Coda's temperament is far from that of a Belgian, his energy level is right up there.
